Michelle lives in a one room thatch house with her parents, who are what they call "peasant farmers", doing small-scale farming and gardening just to survive. Her mother also sells fish to help support the family. The father has not been able to find full time work for a very long time, so he does part time work or tasks for neighbors, and tries to raise a few vegetables and animals for his family.

The family is Christian and attend a Catholic church. Michelle has two little sisters that live with them, and the mother just had a fourth child who also has albinism.

Albinism is what makes Michelle's situation extra difficult. The family is in need of help to not only pay Michelle's school fees, but to pay for necessary skin protection items for her, such as sun lotion, sunglasses, lip balm, and hats.
