Elizabeth lives with her grandmother and older cousin in a tiny brick house. Her mother died in childbirth and her father died a few years later, so there was no one else to take care of little Elizabeth. Her grandmother raises a small garden with a few vegetables for them to live off of. The grandmother is not able to pay for Elizabeth to attend school. She was in grade 1 and doing well in school up until that point.
