Uganda - Disabilities
Program Description
This internship involves working with children with disabilities:
1) ECM works with many children with disabilities and with albinism in the Kampala area. During the internship, interns will work closely with ECM staff visiting homes and assisting families and children, meeting various needs as they arise.
2) ECM missionaries work closely with children with disabilities, especially deaf children, as well as children with albinism. Interns would assist missionaries in their ministry to these children.
Supervision
Work will be carried out with experienced, English-speaking staff. Interns will report directly to an ECM missionary or staff member. Interns will work closely with other ECM staff members as well as Ugandan families.
Interns will receive a travel handbook specifically designed for working and living in Uganda. They will receive an orientation once in Uganda, covering cultural issues as well as the work they will be doing during their stay.
Interns will be in frequent dialogue with their supervisors and will submit weekly written reports. Written reports will cover specific tasks accomplished, relationships developed, and learning experiences.
Schedule
It is expected that the internship will last approximately six weeks. However, the actual length of the internship can be modified in consultation with ECM and any staff or missionaries involved.
Accommodations
Accommodation location will be determined in partnership with the ECM field office in Uganda. Accommodations will be safe and clean, in a suitable and practical location. Good meals, both American and Ugandan, will be available.
Expenses
All expenses, including airfare, food, accommodations, and transportation, are the responsibility of the intern. The budget will be worked out by ECM and the intern.
Any school requirements can be built into the internship.
