Ghana
Program Description
This internship involves working with two, and potentially three, groups of children:
1) Primary school age children at Haven of Hope Academy. The intern will work with a Ghanaian teacher in a classroom setting with children ages 6–15 (teaching, nurturing, playing with, etc).
2) Children ages 3–14 who reside at Haven of Hope Children’s Home. The intern will spend time during the day and in the evenings with children at the home (playing with, mentoring, teaching, etc). The intern will also actively participate in home activities including devotions, parties, and church services.
3) During certain internships, it may also be possible to spend time working with children from ECM’s Biriwa Hope Center or working with children in the Sogakope Hope Center.
Supervision
Work will be carried out with experienced, English-speaking staff. Interns will report directly to the home supervisor and the head teacher at the school. They will also have direct contact with ECM Ghana’s National Director. If work is also done at the Biriwa Hope Center or the Sogakope Hope Center, interns will also interact with ECM staff there. In all cases, interns will work closely with Ghanaian teachers and caregivers.
Interns will receive a travel handbook specifically designed for working and living at Haven of Hope. They will receive a brief orientation once in Ghana, covering cultural issues as well as the work they will be doing during their stay.
Interns will be in frequent dialogue with their supervisors and will submit weekly written reports. Written reports will cover specific tasks accomplished, relationships developed, and learning experiences.
Schedule
It is expected that the internship will last approximately six weeks. However, the actual length of the internship can be modified in consultation with ECM and any staff or missionaries involved.
Accommodations
Accommodations will be at Haven of Hope Children’s Home, about one hour north of Accra, the capital city of Ghana. Accommodation will be safe and clean. Good meals, mostly Ghanaian, will be available. It will be possible to purchase food locally and also to personally prepare meals on site.
Expenses
All expenses, including airfare, food, accommodations, and transportation, are the responsibility of the intern. The budget will be worked out by ECM and the intern.
Any school requirements can be built into the internship.
