Samuel lives with his step father, mother and 6 siblings in the Napak district.  His birth father passed away in 2015 from an unknown illness.  He works in other peoples gardens to raise funds for his school fees.  His step father does not have any education and is unemployed but does odd jobs working in other peoples gardens.  His grades in school are good, however his parents can't afford to send him to school so his attendance has been irregular.  They typically eat one meal a day consisting of foods such as potatoes, banana, rice or corn; some of which is grown in their own personal garden.
