Camara's mother became pregnant with her from sexual assault, and the father abandoned them, leaving the mother to care for Camara on her own. She was homeless and hungry most of the time during her pregnancy. They now only survive by begging on the streets. The mother does not really have any skills she could use to bring in some income, since she was so young when she got pregnant, and didn't have time to finish school. They sleep outside or on people's verandas. Camara had never been to school before being sponsored through ECM.
