Abigail UG-KW398
Abigail lives with her grandmother and three siblings in a ramshackle little house in the Kamwokya slums. Abigail's parents abandoned her at birth, and the grandmother rescued her and attempts to care for her, though she has no means to make a living. They only survive by the kindness of strangers or people in the community that can offer assistance here and there. Her grandmother had been working as a cleaner at a school in Kamwokya, but she was in an accident 3 years ago which damaged her back to the point that she could not work, and can't even move around too much. After that she did try to start selling charcoal to sustain the family, but then she had to stop when the lockdown happened due to Covid. The family eats once, sometimes twice a day. The grandmother also has 3 other children she is taking care of, and it has been so difficult for the grandmother to provide for everyone. Abigail had started school but dropped out due to lack of funds to pay school fees.
