Shadia Mukwaya

Shadia was born in 2001 in Kampala. Shadia says, “My parents separated when I was around 4 years, and my dad told my mom that he would only care and support me if I am staying with him, something that my mom never accepted”. Her family is Muslim, and we hope to win them to Christ. Her father is now unemployed and separated from the family. Since then, Shadia and her mom have been living in Kamwokya, a slum area located in Kampala city. Life has not been easy for the two of them, as her mom has continuously struggled to provide for them. “Over the years, my mom has done several odd jobs in an aim to support the family. At the moment, she owns a small snacks business from which she generates some income used to cater for medical, feeding, school and other needs”, says Shadia. Because of their precarious financial situation, Shadia has been in and out of school. In order to assure her continued education and extend the love of Christ to the family in a tangible way, ECM enrolled Shadia into the sponsorship program in 2008 when she was 7. She had a sponsor for several years who helped her complete high school, but her sponsor isn't able to continue. Shadia is very talented at cooking treats and snacks and selling them. She would like to expand what she's already doing and start a real business, in order to support herself! She has one sponsor who has contributed some of what she needs, but she is in need of someone else to also help support her in this business start up! The amount she still needs to get her business fully up and running is $1,219. Could you be one of the people (or THE person) to empower her to live up to her potential and transition into independence?
